Dubai – the city & locations

See below the different parts of Dubai and their characteristics.

Deira – one of the older parts of the city on the north side of the Dubai Creek. Here you will find the gold souk, spice souk and a mix of mainly different Asian cultures, every day. Dubai International apt is located here. Traffic can be very difficult in some parts of this area.
Festival City – area by the Dubai Creek and close to the airport. IKEA, Festival city mall, Al Badia Golf Course and several good conference hotels are located in this area.
Dubai Creek – place of the famous abra taxi boats and a nature reserve, this water separates Deira and Bur Dubai.
Bur Dubai – also one of the oldest parts of the city- located on the south side of Dubai Creek. Lots of restaurants (not all with alcohol), local shopping, walking area by the creek, and many apartment hotels. Here you will also find cultural heritage area of Bastakiya, the textile souk and Dubai Museum. Also difficult traffic at times.
Karama – part of Bur Dubai that is famous for cheap shopping and Indian food. Lots of Arabic souvenirs and copy clothes, dvds etc in this area.
Sheikh Zayed Road – largest main road in Dubai, highway that goes from the creek out towards Abu Dhabi. Along this road you will find WTC, the exhibition center, Dubai’s financial district (DIFC) , several business hotels as well as Mall of the Emirates.
Burj Khalifa and Downtown/Old town Dubai – The highest building in the world lies next to one of the biggest shopping malls in the world- Dubai Mall. This whole area is amazing, with lots of restaurants and bars within walking distance. Also stunning architecture, several high end hotels and the incredible Dubai Fountain. Heavy traffic during weekends and public holidays.
Business Bay – ongoing construction project behind Burj Khalifa which will be a large corporate hub when completed.
Satwa – local part of the city with a large mix of cultures and nationalities. Located just behind beginning of Jumeirah Beach Road. Lots of small shops, local restaurants and the city’s acknowledged area for any kind of handy work needed.
Jumeirah and Umm Suquiem – villa/family areas along Jumeirah Beach Road, the beach and the sea/Arabian gulf. Along this road is Burj Al Arab hotel and the entertainment complex Madinat Jumeirah with hotels, restaurants, theater and bars in a nice setting.
Dubai Marina – one of the newest residential areas in Dubai. Located towards Abu Dhabi on SH Zayed Road. Location for most beach hotels,lots of restaurants and bars, as well as the two outdoor walking areas of marina walk + JBR The walk, including the Beach- an outdoor complex with shopping and lots of restaurants + a long public beach.
Palm Jumeirah – the first of the 3 planned palm islands, and the only one that is populated (2015). Spectacular beach resort Atlantis is located at the top of the palm and about 10 other beach hotels around the crescent of the palm. Still some areas under construction.
Jebel Ali – industrial area towards Abu Dhabi, that includes Jebel Ali Port as well as several companies within logistics, shipping, commodities etc. End station for Dubai Metro (red line).
